I would like to start off by saying what a busy time of year this has been in the educational world in which i have stepped into. As you may have read in my previous post's, I have stepped into a more global position when it comes to teaching and learning and of course the world of Special Education.
It is so critical to build rapport with student's, parents and those that will help you in your classroom. This i have observed over the years will make or break your success or lack thereof. Parents, as a teacher you must make it a point to get parents on your side and inform them about their child's progress and insert a lot of positives (if at all possible) this helps the parent gain insight to how their child is performing in the educational setting of your classroom. For this I also have a great book recommendation it can be purchased from ASCD.
Book Title: The Motivated Brain Improving Student Attention, Engagement, and Perseverance.
By Authors: Gayle Gregory and Martha Kaufeldt
Classroom and Building Walk Thru's:
While i have posted much on this topic I would like to recommend a book i recently purchased that will help broaden your perspective as well as ways to frame conversations about what it is we are seeing as administrators and colleagues in classrooms.
Book Title: Advancing the Three Minute Walk-Through Mastering Reflective Practice.
By Authors: Carolyn J. Downey, Betty E Steffy, William K. Poston, Jr. and Fenwick W. English
The World of Special Education:
While it feels like one can never learn it all as it applies to rules and regs, the challenge of providing Specially Designed Instruction is one that I have enjoyed so far in my new role. I am working in collaboration with willing teachers to find activities to keep students working on developmentally appropriate tasks and manage a classroom with all new employees. The process continues to be one of helping students manage their hour to hour activities and meet their individual needs.
This led me to think of ways in which we the expert teachers can work and brainstorm ideas to help out one another. So now we meet biweekly as a department and teachers stay after school. This time is spent learning something new we can implement right away, reviewing files and how to get to the golden standard as well as discuss and ask questions we may have about our current work in the classroom. This has turned out to a positive use of our time and has brought up great conversations and ideas. More to come on this as the year progresses.
Book Recommendation to learn more: Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives.
By Authors: Barbara D. Bateman and Cynthia M. Herr.
Some Final Thoughts from me your friendly blogger and educator, wow I was not sure what I was in for stepping into this new role, I'm learning so much and adding new knowledge and skills to my knowledge of education as a whole. I must say I feel that at the rate I'm having to read and learn I will be a great asset to anyone who needs assistance or feedback. I cant wait for what the future holds for me and where this journey will lead. I admire each and everyone of you who read my blog and have a passion for education and for all those children whose lives you touch each day when they enter your classrooms.
What you can expect from me next month, What does Preschool world look like from my point of view, the importance of community relationships, how can we best serve our Migrant and Bilingual students in the Pk-12 system and What can we do to prepare our student's with intellectual disabilities to transition and be successful beyond high school.
