Hello Everyone!
The count down for the number of days until school is out for summer begins. I wanted to give you a few things to consider as your students leave for summer. There is so mud research on summer reading loss so I have created a list of things you can do to help your students continue reading and finding interest in their favorite topics.
1. Compile a list of books from your local library in town. Also, ask your grade level team or administrators if you can invite the local librarian to your class, at times they can also sign students up for a free library card (if these things still exist, some places use other ways of tracking).
2. Do have extra handouts with passages around your classroom those which you are considering whether or not to toss into the garbage, i recommend purchasing gallon size bags at your local dollar tree and place them in a bag for students that lack books in their homes.
3. For your students that have access to a computer or other portable wifi devices recommend websites that can enhance reading during summer. a) Scholastic b) abc mouse for younger students c) book rags for middle and high school age students d) wonderopolis has many great non-fiction ties and for those also needed to sharpen their mathematical skills consider Kahn Academy.
It has been a great time, giving ideas and sharing a passion for teaching and learning. I look forward to writing about exciting topics i have been reading and analyzing this summer so stay tuned.
